Pressure Points 101

Many years have gone by since my first martial art lesson and yet it still amazes me how people who have spent just as much time as myself or longer tend to complicate the simple. i tend to think its a $ thing. the more cannon fodder you have the more you can bamboozle the ignorant and keep them under your thumb for a much longer duration of time ( keep those monthly dues coming.) Baby needs a new pair of shoes and all… a few years back i was involved in teaching arnis to a group of martial artist that studied pressure points. i too have studied pressure points fascinating stuff. i think the root of the knowledge is good but the way a lot of people express it is “out” there. In my opinion, the pressure point strikes are not for the novice but should rather be reserved for the black belts. teaching a bunch of beginners only serves to eat up class time. with books in hand the novices study and memorize calling out pressure points gb27, l5, Li 22 all the while searching for the point on their partner..did you feel it? did you feel it? they would ask each other. it was hard for me at times to keep a straight face. What a bunch of knuckleheads i thought to myself. there was no basis in reality at all but don’t tell them that. with all there hearts they believed in the no touch knockouts and the intricate sequence of point strikes to affect a knockout or worse.faith is an amazing thing (i must admit) However, that kind of faith i have never seen work on the street it works well in the dojo or for the guys who like to pretend they live in the 16 century but not in the Real World. I’m sorry my friends to burst your bubble the truth hurts (most of the time). wadya do, eh? do i believe in the destructive power of striking pressure points ABSOLUTLY! i have used it a time or two and it worked very well.  i on the other and was well into my training before ever using it. I want to impart the 4 most important vital points in self defense. You can implement these points at any time standing, sitting,  & laying whatever the case may be. you can use your feet, hands, head, and most any other part of your body. To top it off it will guarantee at least a 2 second delay if not more.. are you ready? Now remember this is for self defense only albeit some use it for foreplay? wadya gonna do, eh?

1. the eyes.

2. the ears

3. the throat

4.the groin

Other than using your brain, are the most important points to know in self defense. learning how to acquire and fire at these targets is of the utmost importance. All of them are a one shot deal and that may be all you get on the street is one shot. Anyways, regardless of your fighting style, regardless of your age, weight, stamina, and years of practice if you learn to concentrate and master these first everything else is an afterthought. as in how do you want to express it?

Ahhh, grasshopper

There are One Response to “Pressure Points 101”

I agree. Well put. My other big complaint is that they don’t learn to apply their stuff real time with movement against an opponent trying to take their head off. You have to apply your techniques in a chaotic random environment. As you’ve pointed out, fundamentals first, with more complicated pressure points a bonus or byproduct nice to have. But in the end, it has to be viable in a real time environment.
